On Monday 14 May, a high level delegation of around 40 government and industry representatives travelled to Almere in Netherlands, home to Europe’s largest self-build project where 800 self-build homes have been built on publicly-owned land reclaimed from the sea.
Those attending included several pioneering local councils and some of the UK’s most active housing associations – all of whom are keen to be involved in some sort of large scale self-build pilot project. A string of leading developers and contractors were also on the mission – keen to learn how they too can help provide large scale self-build developments. And two of the most active lenders attended too.
During the visit, Housing Minister Grant Shapps formally announced Kevin McCloud’s appointment as the industry ‘champion’; and he also unveiled further details of the forthcoming £30 million Revolving Fund – to help builders and community groups kick start multi-plot self-build schemes.
The event included a detailed briefing on the project from the Almere planning team and a reception at the British Ambassador’s residence in The Hague.
The event was filmed by Self Build TV, who will be broadcasting a special programme on the event, and we will be posting images and videos on the NaSBA website in the next few days.
